Guidelines for Getting the Right Volunteers for Your Organization

Group of volunteers

Group of volunteersIt takes special skills to be part of a non-profit organization. Unlike private employment, non-profit work requires more than just hard work and commitment. More than anything, volunteers have to be passionate.

If you’re hiring volunteers for your organization, here are a few guidelines to remember:

Careful Security Check

Volunteers come from all walks of life and most of them have one thing in common: a big heart to serve. However, this doesn’t eliminate the getting-to-know part of the process, especially about the individual’s criminal history (if there’s any). A national police check in WA should be a part of your screening process to ensure that the volunteer will not bring any trouble to the organization. Volunteer work puts these individuals in the vicinity of vulnerable people, including children. This is why it is best to hire only those with untainted records.

Aligned Principles

Aside from interest and loyalty, believing in what the organization stands for is crucial to making a difference, because no matter how skillful a person is, the organization will not benefit if one holds contradictory principles. So when you hire a volunteer, make sure he or she will take the mission and vision to heart. It is also a plus if the individual has previously worked for a charity with similar objectives.

Clean Social Media

What you post on social media reflects who you are. So when you hire volunteers, check their profiles on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or other social media channels to get a glimpse of their personality. Their posts can tell you a lot about what they stand for, so make sure that it will represent your organization well.

Finally, don’t forget to look for long-term commitment. It’s difficult when income is out of the question, so consider only those who are in it not because of the money, but for true service that will benefit the world.
